My husband and I are thinking about moving to an island. I was wondering if anybody out there had any kind of info for americans moving to singapore. which island is best and why? have you lived there? what are the people like? we were hoping to live in something close to a fisherman's village, not condos and beach front houses for the tourists. native living. which bugs/plants are poisonous? any one with real EXPERIENCE living on singapore or close by island, please, any information will be useful in our research.

i cant give you any specific island because all the islands i am aware of near singapore are more for holidays - beach vacations, bike riding and other holidaying although you may be able to find a small island near malaysia but from what you are describing i would suggest doing some reasearch into living on an island in or around indonesia because there are so many islands you would have more options it also depends on what your looking for in the island fishing villages are not - i supposed to easy to rock up and live at so it will be more difficult to live near, around or in a fishing village plus they are usually not permenant residencies or composed around culture and race there is a lovely island i visited called Koh Lanta - its in Thailand its a wonderful place to visit there are many things to do there the aura of the island is great and the people are as friendly as ever the shopping is good - nice markets and the beaches also lovely hope i helped look into indonesia, thailand or if your willing to travel along further vietnam - you should find some great islands around these countries if you really want a great place to live i would suggest SAPA-VIETNAM (amazing) look into lovely planet guides they should give you sound advice good luck enojy asia

I have lived in Singapore for 12 years at least.Itts very from what you have described.Singapore is a metropolitan city.Yes it is near to beaches,in fact, all around Singapore,is the sea.As for Fishermens village, well,Singapore has been importing their fishes since early 80's..lol.If you want Fishermans village, you are better off staying in Malaysia. There are a plenty, one of them is Pulau Tioman.Hey i just recalled..theres an Island, which didnt used to be so commercialised in S'pore, its known as Pulau Ubin.Idlyllic, but most of the villagers have since left and i think new development have taken over.As for how the people are like,Asians are generally shy but friendly people. They are not as outspoken and speak only when spoken to.You will find that this is a common asian syndrome across the board.Try Malaysia,Johor Bahru, plenty of beaches and seaside fishing villages too.I will give you a few keywords.Google them. " Mersing,Tioman,Kukup,Pulau Perhentian,Port Dickson, good luck

Singapore is one small island at the tip of Peninsular Malaysia. The land area i s only about 633 square km, the size of Chicago. It is a city state nation. The country is only 1 degree north of the Equator, hence the weather is warm and sunny, except of the typhoon months when there will be rainy weather for about 2 months each year. The population of Singapore is only 5 million, mainly Chinese 70%, Malay 15%, Indian 15% and the remaining Eurasians. In spite of many races and religions, we are a very peaceful society where everyone lives in harmony and unity. There are Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Toaists, and many more religions. You are allowed to practice most religions in Singapore. Singapore is a very modern, advanced society, having only gained independence from the British in1965, hence it is a young nation of about 44 years old. It is one of the financial centre in Asia, many leading banks are represented in Singapore. Singapore is also the world leading oil refinery centre in the world. The country gained its GDP mainly from manufacturing, property and is one of the wealthiest nation in Asia.Singapore is also well known for its port, the largest in the world. There should be no problem for any Americans wanting to relocate here. There is a US Embassy, an American School, American Club, many Americans live here. Because English is widely spoken here, you will find it easy to move around. Regarding which island to live, the islands surrounding the main island of Singapore are Sentosa( for hotels and rich condominiums, Universal studios and casino), Pulau Ubin in the north ( mainly for camp), Pulau Tekong in the north( for military use), Jurong Island in the south east( for oil refinery), St John'island and Kusu Island in the south( for recreation). None of these islands mentioned above are for residential except for Sentosa in the south for high class condo, and Pulau Ubin in the north which is not so suitable for dwelling ( a bit backward) There is no more fisherman village, and no poisonous bugs, plants,or animals. We are never troubled by such things. The only place to live for most of the Singaporeans is on the main island of Singapore. 75% of the people live in high rise apatrments, and the others in houses or condominiums. You should make a visit to Singapore before making a decision to settle here. You will enjoy yourself a lot, it is country of great diversity. You can eat many different cuisines like Chinese, Malay, Indonesian, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese,Mongolian, French, Russian, local foods like satay and Hainanese chicken rice. the following are webpages you may obtain more info: www.singstat.gov.sg www.visitsingapore.com
