The main beach in Singapore is along East Coast Park and is about 15 minutes drive from the business district. The beach is located at the lower east side of the island (Singapore the country, is an island). There is no train to the beach but you can take a taxi or bus.

Yes, there are people who live close to the beach to go everyday. There are quite a number of beaches in Singapore (Punggol, Pasir Ris, East Coast Park, West Coast Park, Sentosa, etc) However most people tend to frolic around East Coast (10.5km away), West Coast (11.5km away) and Sentosa (9.2km away). It is advisable for you to take a cab to East Coast and West Coast Park for taking a bus is complex and there's no train stations nearby. To get to East Coast Park via bus, hop on SBS Transit bus 16 towards the East Direction and alight at Marine Terrace. Then use the underpass to cross the ECP expressway. To get to West Coast Park, hop on SBS Transit bus 16 towards the West Direction and alight at Bukit Merah Interchange, then switch over to SMRT bus 176 at the interchange at alight directly at West Coast Park. For Sentosa, you can take a train down to HarborFront MRT station and transit via the Sentosa Shuttle or the monorail to the island. Do note that you have to pay an entrance fee ($3) to Sentosa though.

Our beaches either face a busy harbor or neighboring Johore where sewage is still discharged. Better beaches are located at East Coast, it was a land fill before so depth incline is sharp. The sea is calm with little surf. There is not a lot of swimming and most people use the coastline for roller blading or cycling.

The beaches in Singapore are very unhygienic , and most Singaporeans don't like to get tanned .

The NEAREST beaches to residential areas are 1. East Coast Beach 2. Changi Beach 3. Pasir Ris Beach However, I strongly recommend the beaches on Sentosa Island, an offshore island resort on the SOUTH of Singapore. Take the MRT (subway) to HarbourFront Station and then take a cable car or bus via a causeway into Sentosa Island. The beaches are nicer and cleaner there but they are man-made. Worth a visit. Try to go on a weekday if you don't like crowds. But if you like to people watch, then go on a SATURDAY, but it would be very crowded. There are also bars, eateries along the beaches of Sentosa. However, Sentosa Island is currently undergoing lots of renovation and construction. An Integrated Resort, Universals Amusement Park and casinos are under construction now. It would soon be a very exciting place to visit, in a year's time. If you are not satisfied with the beaches on Singapore's Sentosa Island, you can always take a ten hour bus ride up north Malaysia, then a ferry ride to Pulau Redang, a gorgeous and stunning beach resort in Malaysia, where you can snorkel and see corals.
