Do you have to live in The Netherlands if you fly for KLM? Not only KLM, but other airlines like... If you fly for Korean Air, do you have to live in Korea? If you fly for Singapore airlines, do you to live in Singapore? Can you live in NY? This is for pilots only.

It depends on what base the airline assigns you because all newly hired pilots starts as co pilot, they get assigned to whatever base the airline decides, it depends on seniority too ,because you can also get promoted to Captain, airline captains get to choose their own base, choose where they want to go, bid on what plane they want to fly, etc. You dont have to live in a certain country but you have to live near your crew base or commute to your crewbase, in other words, it is called jumpseating to your crew base- E.g- A pilot for ABC Airlines lived in NYC and if they were based at LAX, they would have to jumpseat from NYC to LAX to get to their base. If a pilot for XYZ Airlines lives near SeaTac Int'l Airport, if they were based at SeaTac, they would have to drive or take a cab to SeaTac.

Some airlines have crew bases in other countries, but most do not. You have to live close enough to your crew base (domicile) to make it practical to commute to work. Do you want to spend most of your days off going to or from your crew base? How many days of do you think airline pilots get? Not as many as you probably think. You also need to be well rested when you show up for work. Commuting halfway around the globe is not conducive to that. You pretty much need to reside in-country, or live reasonably close with commute connections guaranteed to get you to work on time, every time.

It depends on the airline. During my airline career, I met several airline pilots who lived in the USA and worked for airlines all over the world, and vice versa. Not all airlines are that open to where you live, especially if you are on reserve. Even if the airline doesn't care where you live, you have to take into account how long it will take you to get to work. The longest commute I had, as an airline pilot, was only a 2 hour flight and I thought it was hell. I couldn't imagine having to commute to a different country. You would never be home.
