What's Singapore like to live in long-term

What's Singapore like to live in long-term?
Obviously, Singapore is very well developed, clean, fairly safe and has leisure aminities on par with anywhere else in the world, but how do you feel about it as a place to reside long term? Does the small size of the island ever make you feel restricted? Is it's size adiquate, ie could a long-term resident of Singapore go out and explore new places in Singapore he's never seen? Do you view Singapore as an island with few people, or do you feel as if you live in a standard country with loads of different people around you from different walks of life you've never seen before? What is your opinions on living in Singapore?

its hot as heck, over 5 million folks in a 75 mile circle. I got the best gal from there, so all the rest are seconds. They are totally depend ant on outside food & power & water. The law is a tad one sided Oh yeah, they are surrounded by muslim countries.

Depending on your final objective, to be a permenant resident (PR) or to obtain citizenship, or just to work here for a couple of years to a decade. Singapore is always in the path of upgrading, to maintain herself as one of the world leading "garden city". Hence you will expect lots (I mean really a lot) constructions on and off all over the island. You will not be surprise you will be waken up by jack hammers at 9 am in the morning, they took 2 months to complete the job, and in less then 6 months, they start jack hammering again, on the same job. This is one part I don't like about Singapore. Well, I would not say I feel restricted, but I would say I am bored here. As you and everybody said, Singapore is a dot on the world map, how much things/activities can you do when you have free time to spare? Reading a book in Starbucks? Have a good meal with families and friends? Go Sentosa and spend a day there? Go Boat quey and Clark Quey and enjoy one night there? Track a day in Pulau Ubin? Shop until you drop for a day in Orcahrd Road? How many times can you repeat all this things/activities? Living standard in Singapore is pretty high too. A person will need about $15 dollars a day (meals and basic public transportion) to survive, that's $450 a month, just to full your stomach and moving around, others daily household necessary spendings are not counted yet, of course, "entertainment fees" are not budgeted in too, including buying or doing something to please yourself. You may or maybe use to Singapore if you talk about culture. To me, we have none, some will say we have mixed cultures. You can find lots of malays in Geylang Serai, you can have lots of Indians in Serangoon Road, the chinese, needless to say, Chinatown. Chinese is the majority population here, hence, you can expect pretty chinese oriented style here. We celebrate new year 4 times a year (for 4 major races here)... not too bad though... hehehe... All in all, if you plan to come here to work and settle down here, maybe Singapore is a good place for you. If you plan to enjoy your retirement days here, I suggest you can think again. Singapore is still a small fast pace country, no way to escape from this, you sure will feel it. Lastly and overall, Singaporeans mindset quality is still pretty low, partly due to our educational systems and "society idealogy" effects.

Living in Singapore, there is a high chance that in the long run, a person would lose their sense of culture and value for cultural traits (eg language, sports, art etc.) The vast majority of the population is preoccupied with practical affairs and as a result, most appear to be soulless drones. On the other hand, there is no lack of distractions. Today you can watch a play (even if you can't appreciate it much), and tomorrow you can try out wakeboarding (even if you'll never have the time to be any good at it). One thing for sure, you will become very good at multitasking, yet at the same time, grow dependent on the government for many things. You will suffer many dissapointments, yet become good at complaining. Singapore, the land of many faces. Most of which are unrecognizable.

Very small island. After you went/visit to all the good and fun places you will get bored and don't know what to do.. better you got many friends.

How long-term do you mean? Migrate here and die here? How old are you now? To me, it is generally a good place. Of course there will be complains about this and that, unhappiness as a result of some policies, etc. However, on hindsight, it is not so bad after all. We have a good local transport system, a visionary government, a wide variety of food, a lot of shopping complexes, a healthy night life, a vibrant economy, a huge labour force, an affordable health care system, and a growing construction industry. ;p

I just moved here a few weeks ago so i'm trying to figure things out myself. So far, since I don't have any friends, I'm pretty bored. If you're an expat, then you'll know that in the summer most europeans and westerners go home for the summer. So, I wouldn't really reccomend not making this your home base. I think that once I have friends, I'll have a pretty good time though. The American Club is a great place to relax and meet people from the US. I like Sinapore because it's very clean. It is really small though and you don't see to many diverse cultures. Mostly Chinese and Indians and Maylays. Sometimes I feel odd walking around and usually being the only tall blondie in the crowd. People here are pretty small so if you are a big boned American or German you might have a few diffuculties finding clothing. They have places like Marcks and Spencer but a lot of it is REALLY expensice, ie $100 for a cotton skirt. I like Singapore but I can't wait to be back home.

Being a Singaporean for 30 over years, I don't really think Singapore is a place to live in long-term. To live here, you must at least strong and healthy enough to continues working. Don't talk about the high living standard, the social subsidaries here is not even sufficient for anyone if you can't work during old age. There is no such thing as free Medical (even at your old age) & education here. In Singapore, you are expected to work till 70 years old...or maybe 80? There have the world highest paid Government, yet let the poeple take care of their own old age. My opinion is work here, and retire elsewhere.
